What is YouTube Advertising?

YouTube Advertising is a marketing strategy that involves placing Ads on the platform's videos. YouTube Ads come in three types: TrueView, Pre-rolls, and Bumpers. To use YouTube Advertising, you need to bid and select a budget that will enable you to distribute your Ads across the platform and maximize your user reach. With people aged 18-49 watching YouTube videos daily, YouTube Advertising has become a significant player in the marketing world.

The 3 YouTube Ad Types

TrueView Ads

TrueView Ads are standard Ads that require viewers to view or interact with the advertisement. These videos are paid for by advertisers when a viewer views the Ad for 30 seconds up until the end of the video or clicks on the call to action. TrueView Ads can be either skippable or non-skippable. Skippable Ads can last from 6 seconds to 12 minutes, while non-skippable Ads last from 15-20 seconds. There are two forms of TrueView Ads: video discover Ads and In-stream Ads.

Video Discover Ads appear on the YouTube homepage, search-related pages, and suggestions. In-stream Ads appear before a video is played and come with a skip option after 5 seconds. In-stream Ads can also appear on the Google Display Network (GDN). They can be further customized with various CTAs and other texts.

Pre-roll Ads

Pre-roll Ads are non-skippable In-stream Ads that play for 15-20 seconds at the beginning or middle of the video that someone is watching. They can also be skippable Ads that play in the middle of a video that consists of either 10 minutes or longer than that.

Bumper Ads

Bumper Ads are the shortest Ads of the three, and they last for 6 seconds. They play before a viewer's selected video. However, this type of Ad is one of the least effective advertisements as it can't get a message across in 6 seconds.
